There is a difference between booking a river cruise and crafting one.

I know the difference — because I’ve lived both sides of it.

I am a certified river cruise specialist who has sailed the rivers herself — multiple times, across multiple lines, through some of Europe's most iconic waterways. My knowledge isn't drawn from brochures. It comes from standing on the deck, walking the shore excursions, dining in the restaurants, and understanding firsthand what makes a river journey truly exceptional.

Penny's Story

For more than a decade, my life ran on other people's emergencies

At 40, I fell and fractured my spine, and spent years fighting a medical system more interested in managing my pain than restoring my life. At 43, surgical menopause. Since then I spent years supporting my son through a mental health crisis — the kind that reshapes your family and puts you in survival mode for years at a stretch. Business losses. COVID taking the travel business I had built from nothing. A decade plus of holding everything together for everyone around me while my own body and dreams waited quietly and sometimes not so quietly on the other side.

My nervous system forgot how to rest.

Travel was always woven through my life — it was my work, my love, my intention. But the version that was just for me, the slow-mornings-in-Europe version, the time-that-belongs-entirely-to-me version — that one kept getting pushed to later.

And then I got on a river.

I don’t know how to fully explain what happened the first time I was on a river cruise with nowhere to be and no one waiting. The scenery moved past the window. Someone brought me exactly what I needed before I asked. The hours had a different quality — unhurried, present, finally mine.

For the first time in years, I exhaled.

Not a breath. An exhale. There’s a difference. You already know what I mean.

I am 53. I am still navigating my own health — I have surgery scheduled and appointments I’m preparing for, and a body that carries the weight of the last decade. And I am also, right now, with all of that still true, building the life I kept deferring.

That is not inspiration. It is a decision.

“If you’re reading this and recognizing yourself — that is not a coincidence. It’s already your turn.”

One Luxe Journey exists because the woman who most deserves an extraordinary experience is often the last one to give herself permission to have it.

And because the most luxurious thing I can offer you isn’t a price point. It’s how it feels.

Experiential luxury is the warmth in the details — someone anticipating your need before you voice it, meals you didn’t have to plan, a morning that is entirely yours. For a woman who has been “on” for everyone else for years, that feeling isn’t indulgent. It’s necessary. It’s what I build into every journey I craft.

One Luxe Journey isn’t about what a trip costs. It’s about what it gives back.

River cruising is not a product category.
It is the most elegant solution I know to every reason women give themselves for not going.

Is a River Cruise hard to plan?

Is River Cruising good for Solo Travellers?

Do You Actually Get to Experience Destinations on a River Cruise?

River cruising is one of the most effortless holidays you can book. Everything is handled from the moment you arrive — multiple destinations, a single cabin you never have to leave, shore excursions built into your itinerary, and meals and curated experiences woven throughout each day. There is no layering of hotels, no logistics to coordinate between cities, no decisions to make once you're on board. Your only job is to be present.

River cruising is genuinely well-suited to solo travel — and not just because of the itinerary. River ships are intimate by design: 100 to 200 guests, not 3,000. That scale creates something ocean cruising rarely does — a real sense of community without the pressure of it. You will find your people. You will also find your own space. Both are possible, often on the same afternoon. If you've been waiting for the right companion or the right moment, a river cruise gives you a way to go now, on your own terms.

Yes — and this is one of the clearest differences between river and ocean cruising. River cruising moves at the pace of the water, docking in the heart of cities and villages rather than at a port miles outside of town. You wake up somewhere new every morning without lifting a bag, and you step off the ship directly into the destination — the market square, the old town, the vineyard. There is no racing. There is no skimming the surface. The itinerary is built around being somewhere, not just passing through it.

Working with Penny

When you work with One Luxe Journey, you are not filling out a form and getting an itinerary in return.

You get a conversation — a real one — about where you are right now, what you’ve been wanting, what’s been holding you back, and what kind of experience would actually mean something to you. Then I build it.

I have personally sailed the Danube, Rhine, Moselle,Rhône, Mekong and Seine Nile, and Chobe rivers — across multiple cruise lines, multiple times. My recommendations don’t come from brochures. They come from standing on the deck, walking the excursions, and knowing firsthand what makes a journey genuinely exceptional.

I travel a minimum of twice a year to maintain that knowledge — because when you’re investing in an experience, you deserve someone who can say “I was just there” and mean it.
